Essential New Soul!
We’ll never turn back by Mavis Staples
This is the best solo recording of her career, it’s full of power, soul and grace, and almost certainly one of the strongest releases of 2007! For many years, Mavis Staples, in company with family band the Staple Singers, has been laying down the law in deep funky soul music and socially conscience R&B. With this CD the musical framework has been crafted by Ry Cooder, and his swampy rhythms and earthy textures infuse fresh life into old bones. The intensity is sometimes spooky. For good measure, Cooder has lavished upon this project some of his most electrifying guitar playing in years. Check out ‘Eyes On The Prize’ and ‘In The Mississippi River’. A truly stunning CD!
Music City Soul by Beverley Knight
At long last an inspiring collection from Beverley Knight. With this album she is performing music that really does her justice! Recorded in five days in Nashville, Tennessee, Music City Soul sees Beverley adopting a live, organic soul sound that pushes her gospel roots to the fore and the result is electric. The album is produced by Mark Nevers (producer of Candi Staton's acclaimed 2006 album) and features a fine collection of local Tennessee musicians who have played with legends such as Elvis Presley and Al Green. Music City Soul also features the guitar playing of legendary Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood on three tracks. A classy album from a classy singer - it is indeed Soul, and a simply great album.
